This version of La Dolce Vita is similar to one of my favorite classic tall drinks, the Americano. It substitutes amaro for sweet vermouth, which makes it even more bitter, more herbal, and less sweet than an Americano. It also has a lemony aroma instead of orange. This aperitif makes for a great change of pace, and the low alcohol content means you can enjoy several without getting too drunk. (Like all Campari drinks, it is probably an acquired taste, especially with the use of amaro.)
The Americano is one of my favorite tall drinks. Although not as potent as it's younger sibling, the Negroni, the flavor is still very herbal, bitter sweet and orangey. It's the perfect aperitif for a hot summer afternoon while firing up the barbecue. And the low alcohol content means you can enjoy several Americanos without getting too drunk. (But it's still an acquired taste for those not used to Campari.)
